Midnight Bear Breads – Hanapepe

These folks make nice bread with local and organic ingredients .  The bakery is on the dry side of the island in the artsy town of Hanapepe.

Pick up a loaf or two and a slice of pizza at the cafe or while exploring Hanapepe Art Night (every Friday).

The breads are also available for purchase at many Art Events and Farmer’s Markets around the island too.

Our favorite so far is the cinnamon bread.

Orchid Alley – Old Town Kapaa

It may be a little hard to find, but is well worth the stop.  Orchid Alley is nestled between a couple of stores not too far north past the ABC store mauka “mountain side” of the street.

They have a tremendous selection of orchids and many other nice surprises too.

If you love orchids and flowers, it is well worth stopping  by – and if you find something you like, they can ship it back to you.

They also participate in the Kauai Orchid Show – Hanapepe every April too!

Golf

Kauai has beautiful world class golf courses, many are right at the oceans edge.  Don’t let the view swoon you, these courses can be extremely tough.

Go to the Makai Course in Princeville for a relaxing game.  Prepare to be challenged at the Prince in Princeville.  Play local at the Wailua Municipal Course in Kapaa or Puakea in Lihue.  Or, keep going down island to the Poipu Bay Golf Course.

Bring you clubs on the plane or ship them ahead of time to the Princeville Mail Service Center (808.826.7331) 2 miles from Pu’u Poa 306 for pickup. Try out a new set of clubs by renting at the course or have a set delivered to your door.

Below are a variety of links with information on courses, club rentals, etc.

Below are some links to several yoga and pilates studios on the North Shore.  They are within a 5 to 15 minute drive from Pu’u Poa 306.  Some offer drop in classes while others require advanced reservations.  Take a look and see which style and venue suite your preference.

Smith Family Garden Luau – Wailua “Kapaa”

There were once many luaus on the island.  Times have changed and many of the luau traditions have changed or gone away all-together.

The Smith Family Garden Luau still holds true to the traditions of the luau.  This is a place to step back in history a bit and experience Aloha with the beautiful Hawaiian music, hula dancing, fire knife dancing and a great Hawaiian meal complete with taro and the pork cooked in the imu (the pit in the ground).

Holo Holo Charters – Port Allen

Holo Holo Charters is a pretty diverse boat tour operation.  They are professional and offer a range of tour options with their fleet of boats.  For an action experience, the rigid inflatable is a perfect choice.  Choose the sail or power catamaran for a more calm, relaxing cruise.  This is another operation that has been around for quite awhile.

Holo Holo offers charters to Napali and Niihau.

The only setback for taking this tour is the long drive from Princeville to Port Allen.  Give yourself at least 1.5 hours for the drive.

Hawaiian School of Surfing – Hanalei Beach

Titus Kinimaka is a very well know name for surfing – particularly on Kauai.  He is a professional surfer and has translated that love of the ocean into a surf school – Hawaiian School of Surfing.  Titus grew up surfing Kauai’s waves and they have taken him all over the world.  You will find his team out daily around the Hanalei Pavilion teaching lessons.

Hawaiian Surfing Adventures – Hanalei Beach

Mitch has been surfing Kauai waves all his life and transformed his passion into a surf school.  You will find him and his team out at Hanalei Pier early every morning getting ready to teach another group of surferr wannabes how to hop on a board and ride the waves.  If paddling is on the wish list, they teach this too.

Napali Coast Hanalei Tours “UFO” – Hanalei

This is a long running Napali boat tour operation departing conveniently from Hanalei Bay.  The captain runs a well organized program.

Getting to the boat is half the fun.

Some of the benefits of departing from Hanalei is the 15 minute drive to reach the boat from Princeville and the fact that Napali is just around the corner once you are on the boat.  The one less exciting aspect of departing from Hanalei for some is the return which tends to be bumpier.  As boats go, UFO is well suited for the waves because it has a twin hull making it a bit less bouncy and bumpy than single hull boats.

Captain Andy’s Napali Tour – Port Allen

Captain Andy’s is one of the longest running boat tour companies on the island.  They have a solid reputation and have put together a nice program.

The biggest hurdle for tours departing from Port Allen is making the drive to the opposite end of the island.  It is about 1.5 hours from Princeville – without traffic.

CaptainAndy’s offers a variety of boat tours.  For those wanting a more calm, relaxed ride when experiencing Napali, choose the large catamaran tours.  If a little wave action and sea-spray over the bow are desired, go for one of the raft adventure tours.

Princeville Center – Princeville

Princeville is the “everyday” shopping venue on the North Shore.

It is the place to pick up groceries, gas up the car or fill the propane tank, find needed hardware items, get the mail, stop by the bank, eat or have some ice cream, pick up art supplies, take a Bikram yoga or pilates class, pick up some flowers or a bottle of wine, see a real estate agent or shop for clothing, jewelry, gifts and shoes.

Kong Lung Historic Market Center – Kilauea

Stop by the Kong Lung Historic Market Center to find charming ceramics, home goods, jewelry, soap and clothing shops. Kilauea Bakery & Pau Hana Pizza is a great place to stop in for a delicious latte, healthy lunch or pizza dinner.

This great little shopping village is a particularly good diversion when there is a bit of rain.  The stores are close together and you can sit under an umbrella or the front porch at the Kilauea Bakery and perhaps surf the net with a warm cup o’ jo and some crusty bread.

Hawaiian Fabrics – Kauai

The best place to find Hawaiian fabric and inspiration for a Hawaiian quilt is in Hawaii.  For sewing enthusiasts or a special souvenir for someone, check out these great sewing shops.  Each place offers a little something different.  Walmart in Lihue also offers a selection of Hawaiian fabrics in the craft department too, but make sure to explore the specialty shops.  The specialty shops tend to have a different fabric grade and more options.
